Mayor's Message - May 17, 2020
===============================================
I am very happy to let you know that for the first time since the pandemic began and we had our first positive case of COVID-19 in our town, we have NO NEW CASES TO REPORT over the last 24 hours! This welcome accomplishment is mostly due to how proactive and prepared our local Health Department was and how well we, the citizens of Lincoln Park, have followed hygiene and social distancing recommendations. As good as the result has been it is important that we carry on with the recommendations and continue to improve the health and safety of our town.
This news comes at a time where many states and communities, including ours, are beginning to make plans to reopen certain businesses, recreational activities and community life. Return to normal will likely come with further recommendations and continued restrictions of some sort. Think of it as a temporary reduced speed limit through a roadway construction zone. Full speed might endanger you the driver, the passengers in your car, pedestrians in the area and the men and women doing the work. When the work is complete, speed limits can be increased. We need to observe caution as the work we have been doing continues so that we can get back to full speed as quickly and safely as possible.
Probability is great that there will be support for some of the recommendations coming and there will be resistance to others. Individual recommendations themselves may have support from some people and resistance from others. Personal beliefs surrounding such things as science, healthcare and politics almost ensure that there will be differences in opinion as we move forward. I respectfully ask that for the immediate future, in addition to your own personal safety, you consider the wellbeing of our community with the greatest priority. Do what you must for your own safety and comfort. If you are comfortable doing more, then do more within the guidelines given. If you are not at ease doing more, then please continue to isolate and protect yourself as you have been. No one should be criticized or chastised for doing what they are comfortable if they are acting with proper precaution. Please treat each other with respect and understanding and we will continue to get through this!
