Mayor's Message - October 22, 2020===============================================It has been some time since my last COVID-19 update to you. Fortunately, there was little to report in the way of updated numbers or the need for anyone to do anything different than we as a community had been doing so well. Although there was the occasional new positive test in town, there was very little COVID activity from the end of July until just recently. Two months ago, we had a cumulative total since the beginning of March of 382 cases in town. A month ago that number only increased to 385 (a rise of 3 total cases). At the beginning of October that number had gone up an additional 8 cases to 393. As of today, the total cumulative positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic in Lincoln Park numbers 411.
As you may recall from previous updates, we have been expecting a rise in cases at some point during the fall season. It appears that it is now upon us. That being said, there are some important things to remember when viewing these numbers. Our increase is not limited to Lincoln Park. All of Morris County, all of New Jersey, and most of the country is seeing increases in their cases of COVID-19. There are a few families which have had several members of the same household test positive for the disease, which was expected, yet contributes multiple cases to our number of positives. There was no “spike” as many feared there would be after reopening church services, schools, indoor dining, barber shops, hair and nail salons, or non-essential retail establishments in town. It is important to note that very few of these positive cases are symptomatic, and of those that are, the majority have only mild symptoms. Most significantly, there are few, if any, that have required a hospital stay or treatment other than rest at home.
Although the uptick was expected and the symptoms have not been extreme, it is imperative that we take the virus seriously and continue to treat it as the potentially fatal disease it is. - Please continue to follow all the recommendations of the CDC, the NJ Dept. of Health and our local health department.
- Practice proper social distancing.
- Wash (SCRUB!) your hands often and for at least 20 seconds.
- Wear a mask or other appropriate face covering when you cannot social distance as recommended.
- Be as concerned about the health and wellbeing of others as you are of yourself.
- Stay home if you do not feel well.
- Stay home if you are not comfortable being in situations that might expose you to the virus.
- If you test positive, please follow all recommendations of your healthcare professional.
- If you live or work in Lincoln Park and test positive, please contact the LP Health Department at (973) 270-2040 for assistance and important recommendations.
I am confident that we fared as well as we did this summer and into the fall due to how conscientious we have all been in following these recommendations. I thank you for that and for doing your best to carry on these all important actions for your health and the health of our community.
Please be safe, happy and HEALTHY! Mayor David Runfeldt
